Paris is one of the most popular places to visit in Europe but it also makes a great base to see more of France. There are some beautiful places that are just an hour’s train journey from Central Paris and make a great day trip. Take a look at how far you can get.
Trains to Rouen leave the Gare St Lazare regularly and arrive within an hour in one of France’s most historic cities. You’ll see beautiful timbered buildings, the famous cathedral, and the tower where Joan of Arc was imprisoned. You’ll also be able to taste some of the food from Normandy in the markets and restaurants around town such as cider and local cheeses.
One of the best day trips from Paris is to Versailles, the old royal palace and now a museum. You can get there easily via the underground using RER C and it is just a short walk to the palace. The ticket line can be crowded so do book online before you go to save time. Explore the palace to see where Marie Antoinette and other Kings and Queens lived and then take time to visit the famous gardens.
If you ever looked at a Monet watercolour and wondered where he painted then take a day trip to Giverny. Using the train to Rouen at Gare St Lazare you need to go to Vernon and then get the bus to Giverny. You’ll spend time in a truly colourful and inspirational garden especially in summer. Monet’s house is also worth a visit and has many of his personal effects.
Paris is full of things to do but do take time to see some of the surrounding attractions that are within easy reach of the city.
